He has a disease that weakens his lungs over time and a spinal disorder that confines him to a wheelchair.
But 39-year-old Dennis Kweh wants to travel 200 kilometres on his motorised wheelchair and raise 200,000 for the Spastic Children's Association. East to West Singapore measures about 45 kilometres.
He plans to cover 200 km within three days in a route that will take him through Orchard Road, Mount Faber and South Buona Vista Road.
It's less about the recession than a chance meeting with a cerebral palsy sufferer last year that inspired Mr Kweh to challenge himself. "I found that they're intelligent people but they're limited because of their physical limitations so I's thinking how I can help and raise funds for them. Cerebral palsy people need assistive technology but it's quite expensive, range about $20,000 and it's not easily available. "
Mr Kweh says he will have about 8 escorts, including friends and colleagues from the National Library Board, accompanying him during the journey at any one time.
They will take short 20-minute breaks after about every two hours.
They will rest for the night at sponsored venues like Downtown East and Bottle Tree Club.
As a librarian at the Bukit Batok Public Library, travelling to and fro from his home in Bukit Merah has been his only form of exercise.
To prepare for the marathon, the 65-kg man has, since last December, switched to less oily foods and is drinking more water to increase his mental fitness.
Once a week for 3 to 5 hours each time, he would also travel different stretches of roads with a friend to familirize himself with the route.
So which is the toughest?
"One of this is the South Buona Vista Road and that's challenging because certain parts of that road I can't go on the normal footpath. So I need to go on the road itself. My escort will carry a safety flag in front of him and behind me to indicate we're in front so it'll make safe. Colour of the flag should be orange. "
The three-day marathon titled Adventure 200 Singapore, kicks off at 8.30am on April 21st at the Spastic Children's Association in Pasir Ris.
