Q1. What is Adventure 200? A1. Adventure200 is a quest by Dennis Kweh, a disabled person who wants to challenge his endurance by travelling 200km in a power wheelchair within Singapore and at the same time, raise fund for a good cause. Adventure200 is a lead on to the 3rd international Convention on Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology (i-CREATe), which will be held from 22 to 26 April 2009 at Singapore Management University.
Q2. When is it held? A2. 21st to 23rd April 2009 (Tue-Thu). Start Point - 21stApril at 8:30am, SCAS Cerebal Palsy Centre, Pasir Ris End Point - 23April in the afternoon (exact timing to be confirm) at Singapore Management University.
Q3. What makes Adventure200 so different from other sports for disabled? A3. First it is not a competitive sport, but more a disabled personal endurance and pure determination to cover city streets, parks and trails on a wheelchair, facing expected as well as unexpected difficulties. For example, Dennis being blind on one eye needs to be extra careful on his blind side when moving around.
Q4. Why is it call Adventure200? A4. It is named after a series of outdoor powered wheelchair ADVENTURE provided by the title sponsor Ulrich ALBER Gmbh, Germany. 200 since the rider will travel at least 200km.
Q5. Is this an annual event? A5. This is the first time we are organizing this event, and we hope it will become an annual event
Q6. What is the fundraising amount and objective? A6. To raise $200,000 for the Spastic Children's Association of Singapore to invest in Assistive Technologies that will help people with cerebral palsy to lead a more dignified and meaningful lives.
Q7. Who is Dennis Kweh? A7. Despite his disability, Dennis Kweh sees himself as an ordinary individual and thought of this quest as a way to contribute to the less fortunate.
Q8. What is his medical condition? A8.He is suffering from a rare genetic disorder Morquio Brailsford Disease, which resulted in having very weak lungs. Spinal Sclerosis resulted in his built being very small and glaucoma resulting in losing one eye.
Q9. Why is he doing this? A9. Dennis simply hopes to raise fund and also to encourage more people with disabilities to come forward and get involved in community service.
Q10. Where will Dennis be travelling? Is there a map? A10. Yes, see the attachment sheet "route by day", basically the 3 days have been named as Day 1 - The width Day 2 - The Hook Day 3 - Completing Adventure200
Q11. Where are the challenging areas? A11. We have identified four challenging areas, namely: 1. MacRitchie Reservoir - Lornie Trail 2. South Bouna Vista Road 3. Mount Faber 4. Old Upper Thomson Road
The entire adventure has some elements of risk for Dennis since he has only one good eye. The organizer and supporters are putting all safety measures in place to ensure that Dennis is able to complete the route safely.
Q12. Is he doing it alone? A12. No, at any moment there will be about 8 volunteers taking turns to escort Dennis to ensure his safety and needs. A support vehicle that provides both technical and medical support will be on standby within a 5km radius from Dennis. Doctor volunteer will accompany Dennis throughout his journey.
Q13. What if due to unforeseen circumstances, Dennis is unable to complete the route? A13. A reserve rider, Jovin Lim, the parasailor is on standby to complete the route.
Q14. What are Assistive Technologies? A14. Simple technological devices to help people with disability gain some level of independence. These include Augmentative Alternative Communication device (enable interactive communication), Computer Access and Environmental control. Q15. Why Spastic Children's Association of Singapore (SCAS)? A15.The Spastic Children's Association of Singapore (SCAS) helps people with Cerebral Palsy to realise their full potential and to lead a life with respect.
Q16. What is cerebral palsy? A16. Cerebral palsy (CP) encompasses a group of non-progressive, non-contagious diseases that cause physical disability in human development.
Q17. Why S$200,000? A17. This is an initial estimated startup amount to build a decent assistive technology clinic. And this is seen as an achievable target if everyone contributes at least 1 dollar for every meter.
Q18. What are the other organizations supporting this event? What did they do to support? A18. We are very grateful for the warmth reception and support many organisations have given to this cause. They are: • National Library Board, the Supporting Organization. NLB's top management and staff have rallied behind Dennis in this quest and supporting him in many ways including an internal staff fund raising, providing a contingent to run with Dennis and cheer him on etc. • Ulrich ALBER GmbH, the Title Sponsor in sponsoring the Adventure10 wheelchair in which Dennis will be travelling on, estimated to be about S$30,000. • Nparks - making exception to allow bicycles in some parks and provide advice on some dangerous areas. They will also encourage staff to cheer Dennis on when he reaches any of their parks. • Other Sponsors include: o Bottle Tree Park, City Beach Resort and NTUC Downtown East each sponsored 1 night accommodation for Dennis and crews o Asia Travel group - organize a day outing for SCAS children to do gardening and prawn fishing o Spell Pte Ltd - Designing of event logo and collateral o MingSport - Design and provide website for this event o Lab Rehab - on-site support for wheelchair o Zo Card - Publicity to Zocard online network
Q19. Was an event organiser engaged to do this fund raising event? A19. START Centre is both the event organiser and fund raiser for this event with the aim to create and promote greater awareness on how the use of different assistive technologies can help people with disability lead a more respectful and meaningful life. Adventure200 is also part of iCreate2009.
Q20. What is iCreate2009? A20. iCreate2009 is the third annual International Convention and Exhibition International Convention on Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology. It is dedicated to promote aging and disabilities technologies and to improve the lives of those with developmental disabilities, their families and professionals who work with them.
